Abstract

This creative project's main component is a children's historical fiction/science fiction book entitled The Hidden Staircase. In the story, a young boy is transported back in time. He finds himself living as the son of a family of abolitionists who are conductors on the Underground Railroad. The story focuses on the young boy learning about slavery through a young, male runaway slave whose family is being helped by the abolitionists. The other component of this creative project is a link on the teacher resource Web site Teaching Diversity which is located at htty://teachingdiversitv.tripod.com. This link slavery provides educators with five lesson plans that utilize children's picture books that focus on aspects of the Underground Railroad. Also included on Web page is a link to a list of Web sites educators can use to acquire more information about the Underground Railroad. These two components were created in an effort to introduce elementary-grade-level children to various aspects of slavery and the Underground Railroad. If students become familiar with the Underground Railroad at an early age, then they will have a strong background knowledge base of the subject when they study it in their later years of schooling.
