Abstract
Shibuya Ward has been engaged in a long-term redevelopment program from 2005, and the basic development concept under the program is known as Integrated City-Station Development. The new idea derived from the Transit-Oriented Development model, but it has been recreated by Japanese in accordance with their current urban situation to realize the urban renaissance. Recently, many Asian cities are facing similar urban problems. As one of the few developed countries in Asia, the practice of urban development model in the Japanese city is the appropriate case that is worth to be learned. This project will use the Shibuya Urban Redevelopment Plan as a representative case to
- understand why the area should be redeveloped by reviewing the historical development of Shibuya. 2) Describe how the Transit-Oriented Development model changes in the Japanese way and how the new model - Integrated City-Station Development works in Shibuya project. 3) Analyze the Shibuya Redevelopment Plan from two aspects: One is the physical plan, which refers to the strategies or methods from government documents and have been implemented to realize city renewal. The other one is the planning process. A diagram will be represented to describe the relationship between different groups who involve in the redevelopment plan and explain how they work together. 4) Identify and evaluate the new development model by comparing with traditional development models and summarize the advantages and disadvantages of the new development model 5) Indicate a few suitable concepts of the new model which can be adopted by other cities and explain what I learned from the Shibuya redevelopment case.
