Abstract
The purpose of this creative project was to develop a transition program for first year students of color to acclimate them to the Ball State University environment. Utilizing information gathered from similar institutions with first-year or student of color programs and research on first-year students of color at Ball State University, the First-Year Student of Color Transition to Success Program was developed.Ball State University's Strategic Plan (2001) identified increasing diversity as a primary goal. The current retention rate of students of color at the institutions was examined as well as other factors such as satisfaction and experiences. Previous research on social integration, academic support, and peer influence were also studied.Peer mentoring and monitoring student's progress were elements of the program designed to foster the connection of incoming first-year students to Ball State University's academic and social communities.
