Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine current and future needs for academic support services of student-athletes at a Mid-American Conference University based upon the student-athletes' perceptions. Data was collected using a questionnaire distributed by head coaches during the 2004 Spring semester._ The questionnaires were completed by student-athletes (N = 211) who competed in several different sports.Student-athletes at the participating University perceived the academic support program as adequate. Respondents generally agreed that the available academic support services were meeting their needs and very few suggestions for additions to the program were made. The academic support services were viewed as accessible, appropriate and extensive enough to meet the demands of the participating University's student-athletes.It was important to determine the academic needs of student-athletes and understand how the support services can be improved. Recognizing the strengths and weaknesses of this academic support program will be important in making future program adjustments.
