Abstract

The project deals with the expansion and development of the existing Indianapolis Zoo, with emphasis on design development of a focus area. Based on two previous masterplanning efforts, the project includes landscaping of the focus area, schematic development of the entrance mall/path and design of the Austrailian Building. Emphasis is placed on the futuristic projections, anticipated and desired expansion and overall philosophy. The project challenges the designer to intergrate planning, landscape as well as architectural skills into a finished design. The existing facilities, urban context, neighborhood intergration, project phasing and animal human relationship also present unique and interesting challenges. In addition to organizing the clients goals and overall philosophy towards physical growth, the project will bridge the gap between general masterplanning concepts and detailed design solutions.
