Abstract

Creative Writing in the Community is an English course at Ball State University. An immersive, service learning opportunity, English 409 students meet with young writers in the community to teach creative writing techniques and to write and create a collaborative text. This semester, our young community partners are 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders at Longfellow Elementary School. Longfellow is part of the historic, strong, and primarily African-American Whitely community area in Muncie, Indiana. Many of our young community writers live in poverty and are struggling in school.
