Abstract
This rural community center is a place where people of all ages gather to socialize and learn. The activities housed by this center focus on handcraft skills, from pottery, woodworking, textiles, glasswork and more. The center is designed to promote multi-generational learning and socializing, with classes and workshops taught by local craftsperson’s or traveling guests. There is a sense of community spirit at the center, and it is a place where people of all ages can come together and connect and engage in craft. Learning from the site and surrounding natural elements of ecology and geology, this project explores a striated organization resembling the shale and limestone bedrock. Utilizing the existing lake on the site for a pond loop geothermal system allows for sustainable heating and cooling. Materials such as wood, stone and rivercane will be locally harvested from the site or surrounding areas to aid in reducing the carbon footprint of the project. Combining the programmatic goals of community socializing and learning, and pulling design inspiration from the surrounding area, defines a place that celebrates local history, community self-sufficiency, and our connection to nature.
