Abstract
The objective of this project is to understand male body image and how body image affects the daily lives of young boys and men. Current research has shown there has been a dramatic increase in the number of males that are suffering from some kind of eating disorder, muscle dysmorphia and steroid use.The purpose of this research project is to develop three (3) hour long seminars about male body image and the effect of negative body image. The project could be adapted by any health education department or the counseling center of a university. It will be a free program for young boys and men who are suffering from low body self-esteem which stems from a negative perception of body image. The goals of the seminar are to educate males on body image, how media portrays body images, eating disorders and muscle dysmorphia, and healthy ways to eat and exercise. The project will consist of three major parts: the body, emotional detachment, and resources at your local college or university for dealing with these issues. The first session will discuss the male body and the emergence of the concept that muscularity equals masculinity. The project will discuss the theory about the Adonis complex and the goal for the perfect male body. The group will evaluate how media has exploited the male body in the same manner that the female body has been exploited for years. The second session will discuss how the Adonis complex can lead to eating disorders (e.g. bulimia nervosa and anorexia nervosa), muscle dysmorphia, and steroid use. More importantly the project will demonstrate how these types of diseases destroy the body and, in some cases, lead to death. Lastly, the project will discuss healthy ways of living and proper exercise. The group will develop a personalized plan that will take advantage of resources at the local college and university such as the: recreation centers, health centers, counseling centers, and dining services. The methodology for the construction of this seminar will be based on the structure of the smoking cessation classes that are facilitated by the American Cancer Society (2001). The goal of this project is meant to educate students on proper living and refer them to resources that will encourage them to live a safe and healthy life.
