Abstract

Seeding Urban Growth is about discovering different ways architects can design affordable housing for low-income residents to create/reinforce a sense of community amongst all inhabitants. To test this thesis, an urban block within Over the Rhine in Cincinnati, Ohio has been selected as a prototypical site for demonstration. Some implemented strategies include the utilization of 3D printed concrete components, utilizing prefabricated components, integrating on-site parking, and arranging housing units with cost and space in mind. Some design strategies meant to promote a sense of community amongst residing individuals include an elevated open green area atop the parking area. This raised platform engages the community by providing a splash pad, a walking track, a community garden, quiet spaces, and community gathering areas. The project utilizes mixed-use buildings that have commercial use on the first floor and residential use on the second and third floor, each designed for different sized families. The commercial areas include multi-purpose units, secured bike parking, cafes, and stores. The rooftops of the different buildings encourage community interaction, specifically between the residents of each building. The project incorporates community murals, provides usable greenspace, and is a segue to Findlay Market, which is located just down the street.
