Abstract

The Vietnam War is one of the most controversial wars in American history. The United States’ involvement in Vietnam sparked outrage in some Americans to a degree that had not been seen with any other war in American history. Protests against the war took place all across America, especially on college campuses. The Only Alternative: A Look into Ball State’s Anti-War Demonstrations Through the Underground Press focuses on the protests and other anti-war activities that took place at Ball State University, a mid-sized university in East Central Indiana. The anti-war activities are observed through the lens of The Only Alternative, an underground counter-cultural newspaper led by students during the late 1960s and early 1970s. The newspaper spoke out against the Vietnam War and called out for participation in anti-war demonstrations across Ball State’s campus. This paper will observe the anti-war sentiment shown in The Only Alternative and the events that it supported on campus.
