Abstract

As urbanization accelerates, cities face growing challenges in promoting public health and environmental sustainability. Set in West Town, Chicago, this project envisions a community-centered commercial office building and integrated landscape that actively supports well-being at individual, community, and global scales. In response to key health concerns in West Town, the design incorporates natural light, enhanced air quality, behavioral design principles, social gathering spaces, and green areas. For individuals, balconies, atriums, and park spaces maximize daylight exposure, thereby improving mental well-being. Meanwhile, low-VOC materials, efficient ventilation, and green materials enhance respiratory health. Behavioral design promotes movement through inviting stairways and supports global health by reducing traffic intensity with a walkable, bike-friendly, and transit-focused layout. At the community level, shared atrium spaces, outdoor gathering areas, and engaging programs foster social connection and reduce loneliness. Central to the design are integrated green spaces, including parks, balconies, and green materials, which enhance individual health, strengthen communities, and promote environmental resilience. This project demonstrates how sustainable and healthy design can transform cities into more resilient environments, improving well-being for all.
