Abstract

This study explores the Jewish intent of the music of Ernest Bloch. The research explains the Jewish sounds of Bloch through his influences, education, career, and important works. The sounds are evaluated through a technical discussion of various compositional techniques with a focus on his treatment of melody and rhythm. There is also a discussion of Bloch’s intentions and how much of his music purposefully sounds Jewish and how much of this idea was placed upon him by critics. The research shows that his intent was clear through his Jewish Cycle of compositions while the later works typically include no clear Jewish intent and sound Jewish because of the lasting influence of the sound he created earlier in his career.
