Abstract

Historical understanding and study of transgender individuals has been sparse. As transgender identities are better understood and accepted, it is important to look back on history and reevaluate narratives with an open mind. By looking back on the stories of Catalina de Erauso (also known as Alonso Diaz) and Antonio (Maria) Yta we can find evidence that these two people may have an experience that aligns with what we currently refer to as transgender. Though they did not understand the seperation of sex and gender as we do, nor have the terminology we do, it is still worth calling these people transgender and telling their stories as such.
