Abstract

This project provides a history of flexible music and its applications for the wind band medium in the future, through an overview of two works for flexible ensemble: Frank Ticheli’s Simple Gifts: Movement IV (2002/2020) and James David’s March Tumbao (2020). Existing literature is examined in order to provide biographical information and to identify the composers’ compositional styles and techniques. Examination of form, instrument assignments and roles, texture, harmonic devices, and other techniques provide a detailed look at the two works.
