Abstract

Growing up I had always been a fan of animals, and one of my favorite places to visit was the zoo. As a guest to zoos and aquariums and a member of society, I had the opportunity to look through the glass and see these organizations and the amazing species they provide a home. However, I was unable to see what it was like looking through the glass from the inside of a zoo or aquarium. Over the summer of 2016, I had the unique opportunity to be an intern in the Marine Mammal/Large Carnivore department at the Indianapolis Zoo. Through this internship, I gained an incredible amount of knowledge and experience, of which I documented daily. This Honor's Thesis provides a unique perspective from the inside of a zoo that many people do not have the opportunity to experience. Throughout the Author's Statement and Analysis section, topics such as animals in captivity, the role of zoos and aquariums, and training/care are discussed and analyzed.
