Abstract

This creative project presents a peek into the world of LGBTQ sober safe spaces in central Indiana. Growing up in a small town, environments that nurtured or encouraged identity exploration simply did not exist. Large urban cities have a greater variety of options but as this documentary suggests, these spaces have begun to pop up in smaller cities as well. Creating this project enabled me to explore such spaces with the intent of expanding awareness to those who have no knowledge of the topic. While not completely exhaustive in its coverage of the subject, this mini-documentary acts as a bite-sized introduction to the ideas and personal perspectives invite other creatives in the field to expand upon the topic. The mini-documentary utilizes animation and live interviews to explore the importance of sober safe spaces for an increasingly visible young LGBTQ population with diverse needs. Interviews reveal that a physical place helps individuals feel more secure in their journeys while also building a stronger community and reflects on the definition of what it means to be a sober safe space. The film explores third spaces like gay bars, LGBTQ community centers, LGBTQ-owned businesses, and hair stylists to define and redefine what a LGBTQ sober safe space could look like in any area. Animated media adds a unique creative value that allows viewers to identify with a subject more readily they may not otherwise sympathize with. Those viewing the mini-documentary ultimately receive an introductory explanation of how such spaces affect those who need them, what they are, and encourages viewers to consider supporting LGBTQ sober safe space options in their area through the sample size lens of central Indiana.
