Abstract
The role of a park manager is complex. The manager oversees maintenance, interpretation, facilities management, finances, visitor interactions, and much more. Perhaps one of the most important roles of a park manager is ensuring the safety and health of both visitors and employees. This thesis explores the concepts of risk management and liability as they relate to visitor and employee safety in parks and recreation. It also explores the most important types of law related to parks, as well as important doctrines and codes that are crucial for park managers to understand. Illustrated by case studies and specific examples, this thesis demonstrates how crucial a manager’s role is in protecting employees and enforcing safety principles. This is a practical document, potentially beneficial for future students hoping to enter park management.
