Abstract

This thesis will have five case studies, all explored in depth, to help showcase the critical thinking skills gained thus far in the nursing program. Each of the following will be discussed in detail in this thesis: Patient History (description of patient), Course of Illness (reason for current admission to critical care), Pathophysiology (related to at least 2 main illnesses/body systems), Assessments (physical exam findings, vital signs, hemodynamics, etc.), Nutrition (nutritional needs and interventions done, if any), Diagnostics (lab results, imaging, other tests, and what the results mean for the care of the patient), Nursing Diagnoses, Nursing Interventions (related to the nursing diagnoses, and other unrelated ones), Drugs/IV Solutions (desired outcome and how the drug works in the body), Medical Interventions and the Nurse’s Role (drugs, mechanical ventilation, surgery, etc.), Patient Safety and Quality (related to IOM and QSEN), and Interpretation, Analysis, and Synthesis (rationale for clinical judgements).
