Abstract
In the northwest Mexican state of Chihuahua lives the second-largest indigenous group of people in North America, the Tarahumara or Raramuri. They are known for their ability to run long distances and they live a subsistence life, much as they lived hundreds of years ago. Their culture is being seriously threatened by the encroachment of mestizos onto their land, by the logging industry, and tourism.
