Abstract

Upon reviewing the literature available pertaining to college student housing, it becomes evident that residence halls have been recognized as having the potential to contribute significantly to students' education beyond the mere provision of food and shelter. (2s 1) The residence hall director plays an integral role in the realization of this potential, (12s 203)The relationship between the residence hall director and the students must be considered a vital one. At this time, however, little is known at Ball State University about the actual student attitudes and perceptions concerning hail directors except on an individual basis. The writer's purpose in conducting this research project is to explore this area and to ascertain the perceptions by Ball State students in regard to the male hall directors. These perceptions may indicate how the director's behavior is being interpreted by the students. This interpretation by the students would have great effect on their relationship with the hall director.University housing administrators are concerned with effectively utilizing the directors' presence in the residence halls. With the students today seeking more and more independence and freedom, the functions of the hall directors need to ba closely analyzed and weighed. The students' perceptions may give an indication as to what the students believe their needs to be regarding the services of a residence hall director. Two dimensions of the students perceptions are to be analyzed. First, an attempt will be made to determine what the students believe to be the main concerns of their hall directors. Secondly, an examination will be made of what the students believe the major concerns of the hall directors should be.A questionnaire will be used to obtain the desired information from the students. The sample for the study will be chosen randomly. The sample will include 11% of all the Ball State students who are living in residence halls which have a male director. This will include approximately 260 students.A study of the results of this project may give an Indication as to the extent to which the directors are performing various functions. Housing personnel may be provided with a means of evaluation of the directors$ performances. Also a study of the findings may serve as an aid in determining what the role of a residence hall director should be and in assessing the emphasis to be placed on various functions of the director. Finally, a compilation of the findings may enable a comparison to be made between what the students perceive is important to the directors and what should be important.
