Abstract

Protein expression is a complicated process with many factors allowing it to go awry. In my work with a protein called mitoNEET, I have experienced several cases of unsuccessful expression. This protein residing in the mitochondrial membrane could potentially serve as a drug target for several well-known and debilitating diseases, such as type II diabetes. However, much more understanding is needed regarding the functionality of this protein. In order to understand how it works, it must be successfully expressed. I performed a plethora of trial-anderror procedures to identify the root cause of unsuccessful mitoNEET expression. With this information, mitoNEET can be more efficiently expressed and researched to potentially improve the lives of people suffering from certain diseases.
