Abstract

The purpose of this pilot study is to investigate the relationship between degree of verbal stereotyping toward Negroes and level of familiarity with that group. Intensity of stereotypes and social distance as a measure of familiarity are the principle elements of the study but other variables are also examined in an attempt to determine their effects on stereotyping. These variables include sex, educational level, socioeconomic classification, and age. There has been some research in this area but most of it deals with the patterning of stereotypes rather than the degree to which individual holds his belief.
