Abstract

As a thoughtful music educator, the writer has experienced many problems in working with high school music students. one of the main problems that the writer has encountered thus far is a deficiency in depth of musicianship. This comes about partly through a lack of experience in professional or semi-professional musical organizations, such as those with which one is in contact at the college level. The writer feels a need to rejuvenate and increase musical qualities which tend to diminish in the stress and strain of directing a high school music program. As an instructor of instrumental music in a large city high school, the writer has several students of exceptional musical ability. In order to help these students in their high level performances, the writer should also have the experience of performing the highest class of solo literature. Thisproblem becomes especially significant when one realizes the large number of students leaving high school with good musical ability and poor musical judgment. The method by which the writer can realize the partial fulfillment of these musical standards is to prepare and perform the fine solo literature available.
