Abstract
This creative project aims to expand the solo trombone repertoire by commissioning three new works from Costa Rican composers that incorporate characteristic elements of the genres and rhythms of Costa Rican folk music. Despite Costa Rica's rich musical traditions, there is a lack of literature on solo trombone that draws on these influences. To address this gap, the project commissioned composers Hugo Castillo Castro, Oscar Felipe Ruiz Solano, and Eduardo Araya Fernández to create original compositions for solo trombone that combine academic concert music with Costa Rican rhythms such as tambito, parrandera, and pasillo. The resulting works - Ticombon, Don Chepe, and Ventum para trombone y piano - represent the first examples in Costa Rican music of pieces for solo trombone based on the country's folkloric genres. These compositions provide an avenue for trombone students to explore their cultural heritage while developing techniques for playing the trombone. This project lays the foundation for further cultivation of a distinctively Costa Rican repertoire for solo trombone.
