Abstract
This collection of poetry has been drawn upon to make up the programs for three readings of poetry before different types of audiences. The question settled in part by this project was whether poetry today should be written to utilize the sound of it read aloud or to conform to the modern standards of the poem as a printed and not an oral medium. In attempting to develop a type of poetry that could be read aloud, it became apparent as the project developed that the more traditional forms of poetry suited the purposes best. Communication was enhanced and therefore the poetry was enhanced. The tradition gave the poet and his audience a common ground that was lacking in the less formal, more modern poems.
