Abstract
The evils of humanity have long been an inspiration to many artists, Francisco de Goya included. His series, known as the Black Paintings, catalogues just some of these evils. Atropos (~1819) and Saturn Devouring his Son (~1819) are two of those works, painted directly onto the walls of his isolated estate near the end of his life. I found myself enraptured by these works, being reminded of my own experiences with mental health. Through this thesis, I explore these works, simultaneously weaving in my personal experience with depression through short, reflective thoughts. Inspired by independent press magazines, the paintings and written portions are collected into a zine whose design mirrors and pushes the story.
