Abstract
This creative project presents an analysis of the musical content and significant elements of Bernard H. Garfield’s Quartet (1950) for bassoon, violin, viola, and cello. It provides information on form, melody, harmony, and performance practice from a bassoonist’s perspective. The overarching approach to the piece is from a performer’s stand point, and most specifically from the bassoonist’s, especially in reference to working with string players in a chamber setting.
