Abstract
Hundreds of climbers gather annually to test their limits and endure the physical challenge of a lifetime; that of climbing Mt. Everest. This thesis explores the prototyping of a system for recycling decades of waste – accumulated by mountaineers visiting the Himalaya region. One goal of this architectural intervention is to educate climbers and visitors about the devastation that this pollution has created. Collecting and storing this waste and processing it at a ‘launching pad’ base camp will enable climbers and visitors to reverse some of the damage that has been inflicted upon the region. Whether it is upcycled into gear for climbing, fabric for ‘deployable cabins’ and packs, or remade into clothing, this waste can be used to improve the summit experience. This waste might also be downcycled and sent to neighboring areas where it can be transformed into products for use by local artisans. Establishing a loop of collecting waste and putting it to good use will provide mountaineers with the opportunity to improve the landscape they inhabit during their journey.
