Abstract

The spatial relationship between brownfields and low-income and non-Caucasian neighborhoods in the city of Indianapolis was investigated. The primary goal of this research was to determine if brownfields are disproportionately located in these types of neighborhoods. A. Pearson product moment correlation was used to determine whether significant correlations exist between distance and minority percentage and household income. The research determined that no significant correlation exists for these variables. No support for environmental discrimination was found by this study, therefore the evidence suggests that Indianapolis doesn't need to aggressively target these sites for redevelopment based on environmental justice issues. If a relationship had been supported then Indianapolis could have targeted these neighborhoods for redevelopment.
