The christianity of William Blake

Abstract

This thesis studies the thought of William Blake in relation to his view of Christianity. The ideas that Blake posits as Christian are employed to develop a comprehensive examination of the major themes present in his mature writings, and to suggest the organizational patterns inherent within these. A literary, rather than theological, approach delineates the organic relationship of Blake's Christianity to the whole of his work. Particular emphasis is afforded to Blake's interpretation of Judeo-Christian history and mythology. This study treats Blake's thought in four general areas of Christian concern: the Fall, the Law, Christ in the individual, and God's role in history.
