The relationship of intensity of recruitment, academic performance, and time management abilities in NCAA Division I basketball players

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between recruiting intensity, academic performance, and time management skills of NCAA Division I basketball players. In determining this, the researcher examined responses from 918 male and female Division I basketball players to 29 questions from a previous study done by the NCAA (1988). The responses regarded factors such as outside academic guidance received, time spent on academics, time spent on athletics, academic experience and progress, and overall academic satisfaction of the collegiate athlete. The athletes were broken into inundated, sought, or overlooked recruiting intensity levels (Adler & Adler, 1991). Based on the results of this study, differences were found between the levels of recruiting intensity and outside academic guidance, time spent on academics, time spent on athletics, and academic experience and progress of athletes. No difference was established between the levels of recruiting intensity and academic satisfaction.
