Abstract

By participating in sports or physical activity, girls can benefit physically, psychologically, and socially. With the enactment of Title IX in 1972, the opportunities for women and girls to become involved in sports have greatly expanded, although there are still improvements to be made. The process of establishing gender roles in our society still plays a major role in the activities that girls choose to become involved in and their general perceptions of sport as a whole. This research project examined areas addressed in the research findings to include the benefits of participating in sports and physical activity, gender role perceptions, discrimination in sports, and gender equity. The findings of the survey are discussed, along with possible intervention strategies that could be used to increase female participation in sports and physical activity.
