Abstract

In an intentional community, members plan to live in close proximity, share part of their living space and intentionally participate in shared social activities. No research or planning has been done to investigate teaching ESL in such a community. The aim of this project was to determine what benefits and challenges a specific intentional community in Seattle, Washington would provide for an ESL program. Research was conducted on study abroad and English for Specific Purposes. Both research areas share significant characteristics with a potential ESL intentional community program. English for Specific Purposes provides guidelines for tailoring the program to individual needs. An ESL program model for a future Seattle-based intentional community was constructed. Possible program structures for two hypothetical students were created based on the application of the research. The intentional community and ESL program were found to be a potentially beneficial pair.
