This paper serves as an accompaniment to the documentary, Sculpting the Wind: Alexa King and the Making of the Barbaro Memorial Statue. Sculpting the Wind tells the story of artist Alexa King’s journey while creating a 1.25 life-sized statue of 2006 Kentucky Derby winner Barbaro. This statue rests above the burial site for the horse in Louisville, Kentucky. This paper covers why and how this documentary is unique and important through reviewing some of the various media covering Barbaro, to studying the storytelling methods used in the documentary, as well as pointing out some potential limitations to the project.
