White River Aquatics Center of Indianapolis : a pattern language design approach

Abstract

The White River Aquqtics Center, as it is being presented in this thesis study, has evolved from a complex set of design criteria. In this instance, input has been recieved from the whole spectrum of actors who are actually involved with the project-the park commission, swimmers, coaches, the architects (Browning,Day&Pollack),and the I.U.P.U.I. planners. This interaction has increased my awareness of both how projects of the public are implemented and how the Indianapolis architectural scene is developing.The entire area around the proposed location of the pool, has been planned along a vague, and possibly dubious, set of criteria that relate more to suburban ideal than to vibrant urban intensity. For this very reason, I have chosen to take advantage of the fact that none of the adjoining proposed buildings have been begun, to investigate the alternative of a truly urban design methodology. One which is more integral with the environment can be healthier, efficient, and more human.
