Abstract

This thesis is the culmination of my three-and-a-half years at Ball State University. Since I am a photojournalism major, I wanted my thesis to reflect my accomplishments in that program. An exhibition seemed to be an effective way to display my work and to gain a new experience. No one told me how much time would be needed to put a show together. From choosing the pieces to exhibit, to making prints, to designing invitations, to framing, and finally to presenting the exhibit, I have put in more hours than I had ever imagined.I wrote a proposal for requisitioning gallery space and was accepted to display my thesis in the new Art and journalism gallery. This was quite a triumph for me because I was the first photojournalism student to have a display in that space. I also wrote a grant proposal for the Creative Arts Committee and was awarded a $300 grant that covered about half of the exhibition expenses. The final exhibition was 16 photographs that my mentor and I considered the best representation of my portfolio. The selections changed continually up until the last week before the exhibition opened. I have learned to make effective editing decisions in my portfolio and just as importantly, how to defend those choices.
