An analysis of the role of self-disclosure in parent-youth relationships

Abstract

The research focused on self-disclosure in parent-youth relationships. The general problem that provided the motivation for the study was a lack of open communication between parents and youths. A review of the literature was conducted to identify the nature of, and the theories pertaining to, self-disclosure; the review focused on the results of the research applicable to contemporary families.The purpose of the investigation was to identify variables that appear to contribute to the formation of solid, healthy family relationships. This exploratory study was intended to lay the groundwork for additional investigations designed to improve family communication.The researcher administered self-disclosure questionnaires to test subjects who provided responses to items designed to reveal their perceptions and practices of self-disclosure. The data were analyzed to identify patterns and trends.The results suggested ways the subjects' perceptions of self-disclosure affected their relationships with parents and family. Based upon the results, the researcher made recommendations for future research in family communication and self-disclosure.
