A recital for tenor voice with special consideration given to utilizing the vocal projective mode as described by H. Wesley Balk to interpret Robert Schumann's Liederkreis, op. 24, no. 2 and no. 7

Abstract

This project consists of a performance voice recital and supportive paper, the latter of which focuses on two selections from the recital: Robert Schumann's Liederkreis, op. 24, no. 2 and no. 7. It summarizes H. Wesley Balk's concept of the three modes of perception and projection and discusses the possibilities for the application of the vocal mode to these selections. Special attention is given to the interaction between text and music, standard performance practice for Schumann lieder, and appropriate variation in vocal expression. The appendices include the program of the recital, Balk's "Questions to Expand the Interpretive Process," and word-for-word English translations of the German texts.
