Abstract

For this exploration, my work consisted primarily of handmade convex ceramic discs. I illustrated the surface of each of these domes with a different image and installed these pieces by elevating them on monitor arms. These pieces were then angled to confront the gaze of the viewer to create an installation piece. My thesis exhibition included thirty-nine ceramic works of convex clay, covered in illustrations, as well as three convex mirrors. For their display within the Ned and Gloria Griner Art Gallery, I built an alcove for them to inhabit. Within the alcove, walls around the works were altered to angle inward, giving a sense of enveloping the viewer. Each of these domes are painted with a scene of an animal, either bird, frog, or mouse. These creatures were chosen for their proliferation in the natural world and their prey-animal nature, as they are often everywhere and deliberately trying not to be seen, especially by people. They are often unnoticed, and that is how they want it.
